Read MoreThe lot of handicapped persons in India is really pitiable. Due to population explosion and rapid industrialization the number of disabled persons in India is burgeoning and their rehabilitation problem is assuming gigantic and alarming proportions. It is estimated that nearly 3 to 4 % of the population in India is suffering from one disability or the other which means that a staggering 30 to 40 million people are either wholly or partially Blind, Deaf or Mute, Orthopaedically Disabled or Mentally Retarded. Approximately 5 to 6 million persons suffer from Hearing/Speech impairment. Nearly 50% of these are children below 15 years of age.Only 5 percent Deaf children in India receive education in Special Schools.
